According to Reuters, national production fell to 1.1 million carats ↓ 15% year‑on‑year, while revenues dropped ↓ 12%. The downturn follows a pandemic-induced slowdown that still echoes in consumer markets.

“We are operating on the brink of cash flow insolvency,” said a senior executive at Debswana.

Export earnings, once a pillar of Botswana’s GDP, now contribute less than 10 % of total output, a sharp reversal from the Bloomberg report of 2019. With unemployment hovering around 12 %, mining firms face mounting pressure to cut costs and defer expansion projects.

Analysts warn that unless demand recovers, the sector could trigger broader fiscal deficits, forcing the government to tap sovereign reserves for the first time since the early 2000s.
