Environmental NGOs warn that the development threatens the Mediterranean monk seal, loggerhead turtles and critical bird colonies, including Dalmatian pelicans and flamingos. BirdLife International has labeled the area a “high‑risk habitat.”

Legal probe and political entanglements

Albania’s anti‑corruption office SPAK launched a probe this week, scrutinising 2024 legislative amendments that downgraded the lagoon’s protected status and the opaque land‑acquisition process.
