The latest job market report shows employers added ↑ 172,000 positions in May, holding unemployment at 4.3%. While leisure and hospitality drove the surge, a deeper look reveals a widening gender chasm.

Job Market Gains Mask Gender Gap

Women are exiting the labor force at a rate unseen since the pandemic. The National Women’s Law Center reports over ↓ 300,000 women have left work this year, contrasted with a 572,000 increase among men. Working mothers aged 25‑44 fell by nearly three points between January and June, according to a Reuters analysis.

“The sectoral tilt toward healthcare and education, fields where women are over‑represented, cannot offset the broader retreat of women from the labor pool,” the NWLC warned.

Meanwhile, men’s participation is slipping too, with the lowest male labor‑force count since the early 2000s, driven by retirements and a surge of young men opting out. The paradox underscores that headline job market optimism conceals persistent structural barriers, from AI‑driven automation to entrenched caregiving expectations.
