Hezbollah rejects cease-fire amid fresh Israeli bombardments

Hezbollah’s leadership issued a stark statement on Thursday, dismissing the U.S.-brokered cease-fire as a farce and reiterating that “as long as the occupation exists, the resistance will continue.” The declaration arrives less than twelve hours after Israel announced a tentative pause in hostilities.

The cease‑fire terms required Hezbollah to halt fire and pull fighters from the South Litani sector, while Israel would keep forces south of the “yellow line.” Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that IDF operations “will continue in the security zone” until Tehran’s demands are met.

“We are concerned only with a comprehensive cessation of aggression, a cease‑fire, and the withdrawal of Israel,” read Naim Qassem’s televised statement.

Within hours, Israeli jets struck targets near the Zahrani River, prompting the IDF to advise civilians to stay north of the waterway. Reuters confirmed multiple explosions in the south, while AP News reported Hezbollah rockets landing near Qantara and Qana.

Casualty tallies remain grim: Lebanon’s Health Ministry cites ↓ 3,516 dead and ↓ 10,674 wounded since March. The International Rescue Committee estimates ↓ 1.3 million people displaced, a strain reminiscent of the earlier pandemic‑era humanitarian crunch.

Iran has warned that any U.S.‑mediated deal must freeze Israeli strikes, a stance that stalled talks earlier this week. Meanwhile, hard‑right Israeli minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir slammed the proposal as “a serious mistake,” doubting the Lebanese army’s ability to enforce Hezbollah’s pull‑back.

Negotiators from Israel and Lebanon are slated to reconvene the week of June 22, aiming to flesh out “pilot zones” where the Lebanese Armed Forces would assume exclusive control, though the exact coordinates remain undisclosed.
