In a groundbreaking field test, Google has filed for a permit to unleash ↑ 64 million Wolbachia‑laden southern house mosquitoes across select counties in California and Florida. The Google mosquito release targets the bacterial symbiont Wolbachia pipientis, which hampers the insects’ ability to transmit viruses such as West Nile.

Regulators will evaluate the plan under strict biosafety guidelines. If approved, the non‑biting mosquitoes will be released in controlled zones, where they are expected to outcompete disease‑carrying counterparts.

“We are optimistic this biological control could dramatically lower infection rates,” said a senior researcher from the University of California.

Experts cite data from trials in Australia and Indonesia showing up to a ↓ 70% drop in local dengue transmission after similar releases. Reuters and Bloomberg have reported on the growing interest in Wolbachia strategies worldwide.
