Ebola outbreak DRC: Tedros arrives in Kinshasa

The World Health Organization’s director‑general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus touched down in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Thursday, pledging that the Ebola outbreak DRC can be brought under control.

Within hours, his itinerary listed a flight to Ituri province, the epicenter of the virus, where armed clashes have hampered vaccination teams. He appealed to all parties to suspend hostilities, warning that continued fighting ↓ 30% could raise fatality counts.

“We have the tools, we have the expertise; we just need unhindered access,” Tedros told reporters, echoing a message first voiced by Reuters.

Health officials estimate that over 200 cases have been confirmed this year, a figure that experts hope to cut in half by the end of the month. The WHO’s emergency team is deploying additional doses of the rVSV‑ZEBOV vaccine, a move praised by the Associated Press.

Security and health response intersect

Local NGOs warn that militia activity disrupts supply lines, delaying treatment kits and protective gear. The director‑general’s call for a ceasefire aligns with a broader UN push for humanitarian corridors.
