Ebola outbreak DRC surges amid aid cuts

The World Health Organization has upgraded its risk rating for the Ebola outbreak DRC, labeling it a “very high” threat as suspected cases jumped from 246 to ↓ 750 within seven days, and deaths rose from 65 to 177.

Officials describe the situation as “deeply worrisome,” citing dwindling humanitarian funding and growing community mistrust that hamper response teams.

“The speed of transmission is alarming,” a WHO spokesperson told Reuters.

Health workers report that reduced access to remote villages and sporadic vaccination drives are accelerating the spread, prompting urgent calls for international support.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has appealed for an additional US$100 million to restore critical logistics and replenish personal protective equipment.
