Ebola outbreak escalates across Central Africa

On May 17 the World Health Organization labeled the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after case counts surged. The CDC reports ↑ 10 confirmed infections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ↓ 88 deaths, and 336 suspected cases. Uganda recorded two confirmed infections and one fatality.

“We are witnessing transmission chains that defy geographic links,” said WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

US response and travel bans

The United States has imposed travel restrictions on regions surrounding the epicenter, and a traveler returning from the DRC tested positive, marking the first American case. Health officials warn that four frontline workers have already died, highlighting gaps in protective equipment. The outbreak now ranks among the top ten by size, though it remains far below the 2014‑2016 West African crisis that claimed 11,000 lives. For ongoing updates see Reuters and the CDC.
