Islamic State second in command killed

In a statement posted to Truth Social, President Donald Trump declared that U.S. Special Operations and the Nigerian Armed Forces had executed a “meticulously planned and very complex mission” that eliminated Abu‑Bilal al‑Minuki, whom the White House labeled the “most active terrorist in the world.”

“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump wrote.

The operation, confirmed by a spokesperson for the U.S. Africa Command, took place in the volatile northeast region of Nigeria, an area long‑served as a sanctuary for Islamic State affiliates. Reuters reported that intelligence sharing between Washington and Abuja intensified after a surge in attacks on civilian targets. AP News added that local authorities are assessing the tactical vacuum left by the leader’s death.

Strategic implications

Analysts warn that while the death of the group’s second‑in‑command could disrupt command‑and‑control structures, the decentralized nature of the Islamic State’s regional cells may blunt the long‑term impact. The move also signals a deepening of U.S. engagement in West Africa, a theater traditionally dominated by French and British forces.
