FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the agency is purchasing commercially available location data to track individuals’ movements across the United States. This surveillance method bypasses traditional warrant requirements that apply when obtaining information from cell phone providers, enabling the FBI to monitor anyone’s location without judicial oversight. “We do purchase commercially available information that’s consistent with the Constitution and the laws,” Patel stated, acknowledging the practice that has raised alarms among privacy advocates and civil liberties groups.
