Ebola outbreak: death toll climbs to ↓ 65

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed that the Ebola outbreak has killed ↓ 65 people in Ituri province, a region bordering Uganda and South Sudan. Suspected cases have surged to ↓ 246 since the virus resurfaced in early March, prompting an urgent cross‑border response.

“We are confronting a possible new strain, and containment must be swift,” warned a WHO spokesperson.

Local authorities are scrambling to deploy vaccination teams while laboratories race to sequence the virus. The situation revives memories of the 2014‑16 West Africa crisis, reminding the world that the pandemic threat remains ever‑present.

Regional partners, including Uganda’s Ministry of Health, have pledged support, and Reuters reports that international aid is being mobilized to bolster surveillance.
