A new GIS‑driven analysis suggests that urban farming could satisfy up to ↑ 28% of the fruit and vegetable consumption of Europe’s 190 million residents.

Urban Farming Potential Across Europe

Researchers from the Leibniz Institute used geographic information systems to inventory rooftops and vacant plots in 840 cities spanning 30 nations. The study identified between ↑ 9% and 12% of municipal land that can host soil‑based gardens without resorting to vertical or hydroponic setups.

“We need to level off the rooftop,” says Prajal Pradhan, associate professor at the University of Groningen.

The authors caution that steep roofs exceeding a 2° incline are unsuitable, as erosion and runoff become problematic. Heavy‑metal contamination from urban runoff remains a risk, demanding careful soil testing.

Climate and Health Benefits

Local production trims transport emissions, a point highlighted by Reuters. Shorter supply chains also shrink the “last‑mile” distance, aligning with the 15‑minute city concept.

Green roofs mitigate urban heat islands, delivering cooler micro‑climates for nearby dwellers. Studies cited by Bloomberg show measurable temperature drops adjacent to community farms.

Beyond food, the presence of gardens improves mental well‑being, offering residents a tangible link to nature in dense environments. The same research team noted parallels with the ongoing nuclear discourse on urban resilience.
