Microsoft OpenAI deal overhaul

The revised Microsoft OpenAI deal announced Monday replaces years of exclusivity with a flexible, time‑bound pact that lets OpenAI run its products on any cloud. Microsoft will cease revenue‑share payments for Azure API usage, while OpenAI keeps a ↑ 20% cut to Microsoft through 2030, capped at an undisclosed total.

Key financial shifts

Since 2019, Microsoft has poured ↑ $13 billion into OpenAI, securing exclusive rights that lasted until an undefined AGI milestone. The new non‑exclusive licence runs to 2032, ending the AGI trigger that once bound the partnership.

“The rapid pace of innovation requires us to evolve our partnership to benefit our customers,” Microsoft wrote in its blog.

OpenAI’s chief revenue officer Denise Dresser warned that the old arrangement hampered enterprise sales, a point echoed by Reuters. The catalyst for change was Amazon’s $50 billion investment, which forced OpenAI to seek a multi‑cloud future. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy celebrated, promising OpenAI models on AWS Bedrock within weeks. The move also mirrors strategic tensions seen in the nuclear sector, where single‑source reliance can become a liability. Enterprises now face genuine choice among Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, intensifying competition and expanding AI options across the cloud ecosystem.
