Carbon Removal Tech Shifts Toward Energy Dominance

Carbon removal technology is being re-packaged to fit President Trump’s energy agenda, a pivot that could unlock ↑ $600 million per hub while the sector endures a ↓ 1 year funding freeze.

Why the Trump administration is paying attention

At San Francisco Climate Week, Giana Amador, founder of the Carbon Removal Alliance, told reporters the industry “has a compelling case to help support the Trump administration’s goals around energy dominance.” The pitch now emphasizes sustainable aviation fuel, enhanced oil recovery and strategic commodity framing rather than pure climate mitigation.

“Carbon removal can be the next prosperous and competitive American industry,” Amador said.

Two flagship projects—a joint venture between Heirloom and Climeworks in Louisiana and a similar hub in Texas—received Department of Energy clearance after a review of more than 2,000 proposals, according to Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s testimony to Congress. The approval brings the total green-lit projects under Trump to ten, compared with 21 approved during the prior administration.

Heirloom’s mineral-based capture and Climeworks’s fan-driven filters illustrate the sector’s technological breadth. Executives argue the model will eventually mirror fracking’s path to self-sufficiency, bolstering energy security and providing offsets for LNG exporters and data-center builders.

Local leaders in Louisiana have rallied behind the venture, citing job creation, while activists warn of safety hazards—a clash that echoed in recent Earth Day protests at the state Capitol.

For broader context, see Reuters and Bloomberg. The debate also touches on the nation’s nuclear energy strategy.
