Pause forced Windows updates: new indefinite option

Microsoft’s latest build gives users the ability to pause forced Windows updates for an unlimited number of cycles, but each pause lasts only ↓ 35 days. After that window closes, the timer can be reset, allowing another stretch of protection. The change arrives in the Dev and Experimental Channels for Windows Insiders and is slated for broader rollout.

How the pause works

During setup you can now skip the first update batch entirely. Once the system is running, the power menu separates shutdown actions from update actions, offering three distinct choices: “Restart”, “Shutdown”, “Update and Restart”, or “Update and Shut down”.

“We are giving people more control over when their devices receive changes,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters.

Driver updates also receive a clearer label, so you know exactly which component is being refreshed. This transparency mirrors moves seen in other OS ecosystems and may reduce the friction that has long plagued enterprise IT departments.

Analysts at Bloomberg note that the ability to defer updates could smooth the rollout of major releases, but the repeated 35‑day reset may still prompt users to confront critical patches sooner rather than later. The same logic underpins discussions about nuclear deterrence strategies—delay is a tool, but it never eliminates the need for eventual action.
