Iran offer to reopen Strait of Hormuz sparks diplomatic scramble

The United States received a fresh Iran offer to reopen Strait of Hormuz that sidesteps nuclear talks in exchange for lifting the naval blockade and ending hostilities, a senior U.S. official said. Washington faces a deadlocked negotiation arena, while Tehran’s leadership remains split over the scope of nuclear concessions. The proposal, funneled through Pakistani mediators, calls for an immediate cease‑fire and a permanent opening of the waterway, postponing any uranium‑enrichment discussion to a later phase.

Trump’s Situation Room briefing

President Trump is slated to convene his national‑security team on Monday, according to three Reuters reports. In a recent Fox News interview he warned that a closure of the strait could trigger an ↓ 3 days internal crisis in Iran’s oil system, saying,

“When you have vast amounts of oil pouring through your system… if for any reason this line is closed… they say they only have about three days before that happens,”

he added.

Earlier this week Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s stop‑over in Islamabad produced no breakthrough; U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were pulled from the trip after Tehran’s non‑committal stance. Araghchi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where the strait proposal may be further refined.

The White House, via spokesperson Olivia Wales, stressed that any deal must prioritize American security and prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Negotiations remain confidential and no public concession has been announced.
