Trump cancels Pakistan envoy trip amid faltering Iran ceasefire talks

The White House announced Saturday that President Donald Trump canceled the planned Pakistan envoy trip for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner after Iran’s top diplomat departed Islamabad, effectively ending the nascent cease‑fire negotiations before they could start.

“If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!” Trump wrote on X.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who had met with Pakistan’s army chief and prime minister, left Pakistan late Saturday, saying Tehran remains skeptical of U.S. diplomatic sincerity after recent naval blockades of Iranian ports.

Why the mission was scrapped

Trump argued that “too much time wasted on traveling, too much work!” and preferred direct phone contact over costly diplomatic shuttles. The decision follows the historic face‑to‑face talks earlier this month between Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, which failed to produce a lasting framework.

Meanwhile, the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint; Brent crude is trading at ↑ 50% above pre‑conflict levels, reflecting supply disruptions to oil, LNG and fertilizer shipments.

Casualties continue to mount: at least ↓ 3,375 dead in Iran and over 2,500 in Lebanon, with dozens more killed across Israel, the Gulf and among U.N. peacekeepers.

Germany has pledged minesweeper vessels to clear Iranian mines once hostilities subside, and Iran resumed limited commercial flights to Istanbul, Muscat and Medina.
