Trump tariff UK warning reverberated through White House corridors on Thursday, as the president announced he would slap a hefty duty on British imports if London refuses to repeal its 2 % digital services tax.

“If they don’t drop the tax… we’ll reciprocate with something equal or greater,” the president said, his tone unapologetically blunt.

The levy, introduced in 2020, targets revenue from search engines, social media platforms and online marketplaces that serve U.K. users. Since its inception it has generated ↑ £2.4 bn for the Treasury, according to the British National Audit Office. Washington views the charge as a direct affront to American multinationals.

Trump tariff UK: the looming trade showdown

Downing Street responded with defiance, calling the tax “fair and proportionate” and refusing to budge. A senior official told Reuters that the U.K. will defend its right to self‑determination, echoing similar statements on the Falklands dispute. The Pentagon, meanwhile, is reportedly drafting contingency plans that could penalise allies perceived as “soft” on the Iran conflict, a development detailed in a leaked email obtained by Bloomberg. The memo hinted at a review of the United Kingdom’s claim over the Falkland Islands, a flashpoint that could further strain the “special relationship.” The timing is precarious: King Charles III and Queen Camilla are slated to land in Washington for a state visit, the first by a British monarch since 2007. Trump hailed the upcoming banquet as “an opportunity to reset the partnership,” but analysts warn that a tariff could slash bilateral trade by ↓ 10 % if negotiations stall. In the broader security context, the United States continues to grapple with nuclear concerns that shape its diplomatic calculus. As the two capitals brace for a high‑stakes encounter, the world watches whether fiscal pressure or royal diplomacy will define the next chapter of U.S.–U.K. ties.
