When 24‑karat gold breached ↓ 5% to a record $2,400 per ounce, many families in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh faced a stark dilemma: traditional wedding jewellery was suddenly out of reach.

Gold Substitutes Gain Traction Amid Record Prices

Couples are increasingly opting for imitation pieces, gold‑plated ornaments and one‑gram gold substitutes that mimic the look of pure metal without the price tag. These alternatives allow brides to honour cultural expectations while staying within shrinking budgets, analysts note.

“We wanted a classic look but could not afford a full gold set,” says Aisha Khan, a bride from Karachi, highlighting the shift toward gold substitutes.

Market data from Reuters shows demand for gold‑plated jewellery rising ↑ 12% year‑over‑year, a trend echoed by Bloomberg‘s coverage of the Indian jewellery sector. Retailers report that one‑gram gold bars, priced at roughly $75, are becoming a popular compromise, especially for intricate designs traditionally reserved for heavier pieces.

Economists warn that if gold prices sustain above $2,300 per ounce, the reliance on gold substitutes could become entrenched, reshaping a market that once hinged on pure bullion.
