Russian oil sanctions waiver extended for ↑ 30 days

The U.S. Treasury on Friday announced a fresh general license that pauses sanctions on Russian crude loaded onto tankers as of that day, effectively giving a Russian oil sanctions waiver for the next ↑ 30 days. The move aims to cushion supply gaps triggered by the ongoing Iran conflict.

“We will not be renewing the general license on Russian oil, and we will not be renewing the general license on Iranian oil,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.

His statement appeared at odds with the Friday decision, leaving analysts to question the administration’s internal calculus. The earlier March license covered oil loaded by March 11; the new extension repeats that 30‑day window, allowing Moscow to continue profiting from shipments that would otherwise face penalties.

Geopolitical ripple effects

By keeping Russian barrels on the market, Washington mitigates a short‑term crunch for allied consumers while preserving the broader sanctions architecture aimed at Kyiv’s adversary. Reuters notes that European refiners have already adjusted contracts in anticipation of the waiver.

The reversal underscores how the Iran war reshapes energy flows, granting Moscow an unexpected revenue boost as Western restrictions wobble.
