U.S.-Iran talks: prospects for a second round

After a weekend of deadlocked marathon sessions, officials say a fresh round of U.S.-Iran talks could be convened before the two‑week cease‑fire expires on April 21.

President Donald Trump signaled willingness to meet Iranian envoys “when they are ready to accept our conditions,” a senior administration source told CNN. Pakistan has offered Islamabad as the venue, while Turkey is positioning itself as a secondary mediator, according to a regional source.

“They want a deal badly,” Trump told reporters, adding that Tehran had called the United States that morning.

The White House has escalated pressure by imposing a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which roughly ↑ 5% of global oil passes. The move has already pushed crude prices up ↑ 2.5% and sparked warnings from the U.N. Food Agency about looming food shortages.

Iran’s IRGC warned that any U.S. vessel intrusion would breach the cease‑fire, while Tehran insists on retaining control of the strait post‑conflict to collect tolls.

Negotiations remain tangled over Iran’s nuclear program. Washington demands a 20‑year suspension of uranium enrichment; Tehran countered with a five‑year offer, which the United States rejected, per Reuters. Moscow has floated taking Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, a proposal that adds another layer of complexity.

Meanwhile, Israel’s intensified strikes on Lebanon have jeopardized any broader truce, as Lebanon’s foreign minister announced a tentative meeting in Washington to discuss a “pause” in hostilities.

Vice President J.D. Vance, who led the Islamabad talks, told Fox News that Iranian negotiators “moved in our direction, but not far enough,” and that a “grand deal” hinges on Tehran’s next move.
