U.S.-Iran peace talks stall over Hormuz and nuclear assurances

After more than 21 hours of marathon negotiations in Islamabad, the U.S.-Iran peace talks concluded without an agreement, Vice President J.D. Vance announced early Sunday. Vance blamed Tehran for rejecting the core demand: a binding pledge to forgo a nuclear weapons path and to halt acquisition of rapid‑development tools.

Key sticking points

Iran’s delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, insisted on retaining control of the Strait of Hormuz and securing a peaceful uranium enrichment program. The United States, backed by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, pressed for an immediate reopening of the waterway and stringent limits on Tehran’s nuclear trajectory.

“We need an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon,” Vance said, emphasizing the president’s priority.

The Pentagon confirmed CENTCOM forces began mine‑clearance operations Saturday, with the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and USS Michael Murphy transiting the strait to test a new passage. Iranian officials claimed a warning forced the vessels to turn back.

Casualty counts continue to rise: ↓ 1,701 civilians killed in Iran, including 254 children, and ↓ 2,020 fatalities reported by Lebanon’s health ministry.

President Donald Trump downplayed the talks, stating on Reuters that “whether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me,” after announcing a two‑week ceasefire to enable negotiations.

Analysts note Vance’s unexpected leadership, bypassing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reflects internal dynamics within the Trump administration and Pakistan’s push for a U.S. face‑to‑face with a figure perceived as less entrenched in past dead‑ends.
