In a sweeping analysis of ↑ 14.8 million Medicare beneficiaries, the U.S. FDA confirmed that RSV vaccines slash the risk of hospitalization or death among adults 65 and older. The real‑world data mirror the phase‑III trial results that prompted the 2023 market entry of GlaxoSmithKline’s and Pfizer’s shots.

Key finding: vaccinated seniors were roughly eight times less likely to face severe RSV outcomes. The study, published in JAMA Network Open on Sept. 18, also noted that recipients tended to live in wealthier zip codes and were more likely to have received flu and COVID‑19 shots, raising questions about health‑care access.

“The effectiveness observed in the field is virtually identical to the trial data,” said Dr. Edward Walsh, a professor of medicine at the University of Rochester.

When researchers adjusted for socioeconomic factors, the protective benefit persisted, reinforcing confidence in the vaccines’ performance. The next policy dilemma concerns boosters. Moderna’s mRNA RSV vaccine entered 2024 with modest uptake, and experts are still debating whether a second dose years later will rejuvenate immunity as flu vaccines do annually.

Future research aims to broaden protection beyond RSV. Scientists are exploring multi‑pathogen respiratory shots that could trigger the innate immune system to fend off a range of viruses, a concept gaining traction after observations that infection with one virus can blunt susceptibility to others. For now, the data give seniors and clinicians a powerful tool against a virus that claims thousands of lives each winter.
