Myanmar diplomat refuses to give up UN post

For ↓ 5 years the envoy U Kyaw Moe Tun has defied calls from the Myanmar junta and the United Nations to vacate his seat in New York.

His stubbornness also extends to a sandstone townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, which he continues to occupy despite diplomatic pressure.

“I will not abandon my responsibilities,” the diplomat told reporters, according to Reuters. U.N. officials warn that his refusal could set a precedent for other sanctioned officials seeking sanctuary abroad.

“The international community must address the abuse of diplomatic immunity,” a senior UN spokesperson said.

Analysts note that the saga underscores the challenges of enforcing sanctions when high‑profile figures embed themselves in affluent neighborhoods, a pattern observed in recent AP News coverage of similar cases.
