NYC robotoilets impose 10‑minute exit rule, sparking accessibility debate

Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a pilot of NYC robotoilets designed to relieve a chronic shortage of public lavatories. The city currently operates ↓ 975 facilities, roughly one per 8,700 residents. Seventeen modular units – ↑ 17 – are being installed across all five boroughs, each equipped with running water, climate control and baby‑changing stations.

Patrons receive an audible cue at five minutes, another at eight, and at the ten‑minute mark a flashing light and bilingual announcement warn: “Your use time has expired, the door is opening now.” After a 30‑second grace period the door unlocks automatically, regardless of occupancy. No extension option exists.

Public reaction and accessibility concerns

Advocates for the homeless argue that requiring a smartphone scan or a tap card excludes many users. The Free to Pee Coalition, backed by Reuters, warned that the system could deepen inequities for those without digital access.

“Too many New Yorkers know what it’s like to have nowhere to go while they’re on the go,” Mamdani said at the press briefing.

While the units meet ADA standards, critics note that a strict 10‑minute ceiling may penalize individuals with medical conditions that demand longer stays.

City officials say security personnel can intervene if a user refuses to vacate, and police may be summoned as a last resort.
