The surge in artificial‑intelligence workloads is exposing a hidden bottleneck: the chemistry of the hardware that powers them. “Materials are no longer a background player; they are defining the ceiling of AI performance,” says Mike Finelli, chief technology and innovation officer at Syensqo.

Finelli’s team classifies the challenge as a climb up a performance pyramid, where commodity polymers sit at the base and specialty polymers, elastomers and fluids occupy the summit. Every additional requirement—high temperature, low out‑gassing, plasma resistance—pushes designs toward that summit.

Cross‑industry breakthroughs

Solutions born for electric‑vehicle batteries are now being repurposed for data‑center high‑voltage architectures. The same insulating polymers that keep bus bars cool in a car are adapted to reduce energy loss in server farms. Direct‑immersion cooling fluids, once a niche automotive cooling method, are being refined to lower the carbon footprint of AI clusters.

Syensqo reports that ↑ 20% of its annual revenue stems from products launched in the past five years, underscoring the speed of innovation. Moreover, ↑ 88% of its portfolio now meets internal sustainability criteria, meaning the same material can boost performance and cut emissions.

To accelerate discovery, the company leverages AI‑driven virtual synthesis. Millions of molecular permutations are screened for electrical, thermal and environmental metrics, then narrowed to a few hundred candidates for lab validation. This approach lets scientists focus on engineering challenges rather than endless trial‑and‑error.

Customers increasingly demand that performance gains come without a sustainability trade‑off. “We embed eco‑assessment at the start of every project,” Finelli explains, pointing to the company’s Sustainable Portfolio Management tool, which scores each formulation on lifecycle impact.

External analysts note that the push for greener data centers aligns with broader industry trends (Reuters) and could reshape supply chains for silicon and rare‑earths.

Even the pandemic era highlighted the need for resilient, energy‑efficient compute, as remote work and digital services surged worldwide.

Finelli envisions a virtuous cycle: AI discovers better materials, those materials enable more powerful AI, and the loop accelerates. “It’s an innovation feedback loop that could redefine what’s possible,” he says.
