Benin Bronze Head Returns: 500-Year-Old Brass Portrait of a King

Ancestral commemorative head— a 16th‑century Benin bronze— sits in Cleveland Museum of Art, acquired via French dealer Louis Carré after the 1897 British looting. In the Kingdom of Benin, an oba commissioned a brass likeness of a predecessor to honor lineage; the piece, roughly 30 cm tall, was cast by the Igun Eronmwon guild using lost‑wax technique.

Benin bronze repatriation gains momentum

Recent diplomatic pressure has seen ↑ 29 bronzes transferred from the Smithsonian and ↑ 119 returned by the Netherlands, yet the British Museum, home to the world’s largest collection, remains resistant.

“Each head is a sovereign’s memory, not a trophy,”

noted former CMA curator William Milliken. Initial misidentification of the piece as a princess—due to coral necklaces and braided headdress—has been corrected; those elements signal regal authority. The open crown once cradled an elaborately carved elephant tusk recording the oba’s deeds. Nigeria’s formal request, reported by Reuters, underscores a broader call for restitution, echoing debates sparked by the pandemic‑era cultural‑property discussions. As Western institutions reassess provenance, the Benin bronze could soon rejoin its ancestral altar.
