Trump $5,000 dividend faces congressional hurdle

President Donald Trump announced a Trump $5,000 dividend during the GOP midterm convention, pledging a cash payment to every adult if Republicans retain the House and Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson, however, reminded the president that the plan requires congressional action, despite Trump’s claim it could be funded without legislative approval. “The $5,000’s going to happen, 100%”, the former president asserted aboard Air Force One in Ireland.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said he would “try to implement everything we can” and urged his colleagues to find a pathway through the ↓ $1 trillion price tag. He acknowledged the GOP’s razor‑thin margin in the chamber, noting that any vote would be fiercely contested.

“He’s the big‑idea president. We’re going to try to implement everything we can,” Johnson told reporters.

The proposal arrives as the nation grapples with a ↓ $1.8 trillion annual deficit and stubborn inflation. While Trump argues the “strong economy” can absorb the outlay, consumer confidence remains low and gasoline prices climb amid the Iran‑related conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. For a detailed fiscal analysis see Reuters.

Polls from the AP‑NORC Center show only about 33% of adults approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency, a decline from his early‑term peak. Critics warn the dividend could exacerbate fiscal pressures and spark political backlash in a tight election cycle.
