Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned at the BRICS summit that escalating geopolitical frictions, supply‑chain shocks and climate emergencies are now spilling over into everyday lives across the Global South. He told the gathering of Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa and ten newcomers that the “weaponisation of technology and critical minerals” threatens collective prosperity.

BRICS summit: From Files to Real‑World Impact

Modi urged leaders to convert paper promises into time‑bound actions, citing the need for an integrated early‑warning system for infectious diseases.

“No crisis stays confined to one region,” he declared.

The bloc’s joint declaration, released Saturday, flagged rising tensions in the Middle East and Sudan, called for diplomatic resolution, and pressed for UN Security Council reform. It also condemned unilateral sanctions and highlighted the push for greater use of local currencies in trade. The statement marked a rare consensus among Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, despite their divergent regional agendas. Reuters noted that the group now represents ↑ 11 nations, roughly half the world’s population and a sizable share of global GDP. Modi closed by wishing China success as it assumes the BRICS chairmanship for the next term, signalling a shift toward a more multipolar world order.
