Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that Canada US reliance on its southern neighbor will be trimmed aggressively as retaliatory tariffs on ↓ $20 billion of American goods take effect.

The measures target sectors accounting for ↓ 12% of bilateral trade, a shift that could reshape North‑American supply chains.

“We cannot afford a prolonged trade standoff,” Trudeau told reporters, referencing the looming response from President Donald Trump.

Analysts cite Reuters and Bloomberg for early data indicating a potential 5% contraction in Canadian export growth to the U.S. within the next fiscal quarter. Policy experts warn the move may accelerate diversification toward Europe and Asia, but short‑term volatility is expected.
