US asks Britain to drop trusted news plan

The US asks Britain to drop trusted news plan, citing concerns over editorial control. The United States lodged a formal objection to the United Kingdom’s draft scheme that would compel social‑media firms to elevate “trusted” news sources. The protest, posted on the US Embassy’s London site on 2 September, was a response to a Green Paper consultation opened on 23 June. Washington argues the proposal threatens free‑flow of information and could set a precedent for censorship beyond British borders.

“Any model that privileges certain outlets over others risks eroding editorial independence,” a senior State Department official told Reuters.

Critics in London warn the plan was meant to combat misinformation without stifling debate. Yet US officials contend the definition of “trusted” is vague, leaving room for political manipulation. The debate resurfaces as both capitals grapple with post‑pandemic disinformation waves.
