Italian opposition fragmented: Why Giorgia Meloni Remains Unchallenged

Italian opposition fragmented

Political analyst Lorenzo Pregliasco, co‑founder of YouTrend and adjunct professor at the University of Bologna, says the durability of Giorgia Meloni’s premiership is less about raw power and more about a calculated avoidance of sweeping reforms that could unite disparate foes. Meloni’s grip on Fratelli d’Italia remains unshaken as the right‑wing bloc lacks a credible challenger, while the centre‑left splinters into competing parties.

“The opposition cannot coalesce around a single figure, which leaves Meloni virtually unopposed,” Pregliasco told Reuters.

Recent polls show the governing coalition hovering at ↑ 3% above the threshold needed to secure a second term, a margin that would shrink further if opposition factions remain divided. The absence of an alternative leader, combined with strategic policy restraint, has turned a potential crisis into a durable advantage.
