Fertilizer Prices Surge Amid Iran Conflict

Farmers worldwide are feeling the pinch as fertilizer prices climb in step with soaring natural‑gas rates, a direct fallout of the Iran‑related disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Natural gas fuels both the energy and chemical processes that create ammonia, the backbone of nitrogen fertilizer. When the gas market spiked, ↓ 80% price hikes rippled through the supply chain, pushing urea to over ↑ $850 per metric ton in April – the steepest level since the 2022 Ukraine crisis.

“The supply chain is volatile like never before,” warns Travis Frey, CTO of Pivot Bio.

Pivot Bio and Switch Bioworks are betting on microbe‑based nitrogen solutions that bypass natural‑gas inputs. Pivot claims its products already replace roughly ↑ 25% of synthetic fertilizer, with a target of 40‑50% as research matures. By locking in three‑year pricing, the firms aim to shield growers from the projected Reuters forecast that high fertilizer costs could linger through ↓ 2028.

The broader impact is evident at the grocery aisle: higher input costs translate into rising food prices, while diesel spikes further erode farm profitability. As long as fertilizer production remains tethered to fossil fuels, the agriculture sector will stay exposed to energy market turbulence. Bloomberg notes that 31 Middle‑East ammonia plants are offline, compounding the supply crunch.
