3D Printed Corneas Poised to End Global Donor Shortage and Restore Sight

In a landmark move, researchers have demonstrated that 3D printed corneas can replace donor tissue, potentially eradicating the chronic shortage that leaves ↑ 70% of patients without a transplant.

3D Printed Corneas: How the Technology Works

The process begins with a single donor eye, from which cells are harvested and expanded in a proprietary bioreactor. Using a laser‑guided bioprinter, layers of collagen‑based extracellular matrix are laid down, then cell‑by‑cell deposition creates a transparent, dome‑shaped construct that mimics the natural cornea.

“We can generate more than 400 implants from one donor, each with double the cell density of conventional tissue,” says Aryeh Batt, co‑founder of Precise Bio.

Clinical Firsts and Patient Outcomes

The first human recipient, blind for 14 years due to pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, reported reading menus within weeks and enjoys clear vision at nine‑month follow‑up. Early data suggest recovery timelines comparable to traditional grafts, with rejection rates that remain ↓ 4 per 100 cases.

Unlike harvested tissue, the printed corneas undergo full batch testing for viruses and fungi, ensuring a sterile product before shipment. Cryopreservation trials have proven the implants survive international transit, opening a global supply chain similar to existing donor eye banks.

Precise Bio is now concluding its Phase I trial in Israel, with plans to file an IND with the U.S. FDA and expand trials across Europe and India. If successful, commercial rollout could begin in the United States by 2030, followed by broader distribution.
