In January, Finnish-Estonian startup Donut Lab declared it had built the world’s first full all-solid-state battery—a technology that could upend the EV industry and global supply chains. The company promised a cell with 400Wh/kg energy density, 100,000 charge cycles, five-minute 80% fast charging, and operation in temperatures from -30°C to 100°C—all from cheap, common materials. If real, such a battery would be world-shattering. But without hard proof, many experts are calling it a mirage.Conventional lithium-ion batteries rely on liquid or gel polymer electrolytes, which are prone to thermal runaway and require careful temperature management. Solid-state alternatives promise higher energy density, faster charging, and greater safety—but have proven elusive at scale. Chinese giant CATL expects limited production by 2027.Donut Lab, a subsidiary of Verge Motorcycles, unveiled its claims at CES 2026, saying the battery was ready for EVs today. Yet it offered no validation data, no specs on size or weight, and no manufacturing roadmap. CEO Marko Lehtimäki dismissed critics as biased competitors, launching the “I Donut Believe” video series to drip-feed selective test results from government research body VTT Finland. Those tests, however, revealed troubling gaps—cells losing vacuum, swelling under stress, and capacity degrading after just 50 cycles. The company now admits its longevity claims are estimates, not proven data. With no independent verification and a history of bold, unverified claims—including an AI “synthetic brain” startup—Donut Lab’s credibility is wearing thin. Until it shares transparent specs and scalable production plans, the global tech community remains deeply skeptical of its electric battery revolution.
