The 1978 World Cup signage system, born in Argentina’s turbulent era, finally gets a scholarly showcase.

1978 World Cup signage: a modular marvel

How Puntograma worked

When the tournament organizers demanded a cheap, repeatable wayfinding solution for six stadiums, designers Carlos Méndez Mosquera and Gus Bonsiepe answered with a grid‑based kit they called Puntograma. Dark‑green perforated steel panels received white polypropylene “buttons” that snapped into place like a giant Lite‑Brite, forming arrows, restroom icons and venue logos. Red caps warned of hazards.

“It was an ingenious, approachable solution for a massive event,” says Francisco Roca, co‑founder of Flecha Books.

The original Manual of Standards has been reproduced by Flecha Books; the volume mirrors the 1970s printing specs and is available for ↑ 55 dollars until July 19. Reuters noted the 1978 Cup as the continent’s biggest sporting spectacle of the decade, yet the design legacy remained obscure, partly because the military junta preferred to erase the period.

Each host city received a custom emblem: Mar del Plata’s waves, Córdoba’s peaks, Mendoza’s grape clusters. The typeface, a trimmed version of Univers, is being digitised for modern use.

In a world still coping with the pandemic, the book reminds us how design can unite crowds under a common visual language.
