Bring Me the Beauties docuseries unpacks Eternal Values cult

HBO’s three‑part series Bring Me the Beauties arrives on June 1, casting a stark light on the 1980s‑90s cult led by self‑styled prophet Frederick von Mierers. Former supermodel Hoyt Richards, once the face of Versace and Valentino, narrates his two‑decade immersion in the group called Eternal Values, describing how charm, flattery and an alleged Arcturus origin turned ambition into obedience.

From Nantucket beaches to Manhattan lofts

Richards first met von Mierers at 16 on Nobadeer Beach, where the older man offered free drinks and cryptic talks of astrology. The encounter sparked a vulnerability that the guru later weaponized, pulling the aspiring model into nightly parties and a promise of spiritual purpose.

As Richards’ runway career surged, the cult demanded celibacy, sobriety and public “slamming sessions” that appeared as spiritual correction.

“I felt I was building my own prison,” Richards told Reuters.

Von Mierers claimed the group were Earth‑bound Arcturians preparing for a pole‑shift apocalypse slated for ↓ 1999. The prophecy collapsed when the world did not end, prompting internal power struggles and, eventually, Richards’ departure in 1999.

After von Mierers’ death from AIDS complications in 1990, the movement rebranded as the Lotus Group before dissolving under lawsuits settled in 2002. Richards later cared for his terminally ill mother, reconciled with siblings, and in 2024 announced his marriage to Donna, the partner he once concealed from the cult.

The series blends archival footage, fresh interviews and Richards’ reflective commentary, asking a broader question: how does a seemingly successful individual surrender autonomy without noticing? As the docuseries shows, the danger lies not in eccentric belief but in the quiet certainty that “it can’t happen to me.”
